Mission Statement

The mission of Sociology at Northern Illinois University is to support the tradition of a liberal arts education. In so doing, we provide sociological and other intellectual tools to analyze the key social issues of our time. We further recognize the important role of sociology to enlighten as well as to raise social and political consciousness to effect positive social change, both locally and globally. Grounded in this mission, our departmental goals and program objectives encourage students to develop a sociological imagination, learn the techniques and implications of sociological inquiry, understand the dynamics of social justice, and apply their sociological skills.
