Q: What is AKD?

A: A non-secret, democratic, international society of scholars dedicated to the ideal of “investigating humanity for the purpose of service.”

Q: Who cares?  Why become a member?

A: 2 Reasons:

1.     Recognizing academic achievement. AKD membership reflects a standard of academic accomplishment and excellence.

2.     Job market returns.

For new graduates on the job market pursuing certain types of employment, AKD membership will increase your salary.  For example, civil service employees receive a 2-step boost in pay grade if they list AKD membership on job applications.  AKD is a great way to spiff up your resumé.

Q:  So how do I join?

A: Minimum requirements include:

·        Junior Standing

·        Completed at least 4 courses in sociology at NIU

·        Overall GPA requirement of 3.0

·        Sociology GPA of 3.0

If you meet these requirements and are interested in joining AKD, come to the Main Office in the Department of Sociology, 815 Zulauf Hall, to pick up an application form.  Membership dues are $30 and are due at the time of application.
