Graduate Assistantships

Types of Assistantships
Several types of assistantships are available within the sociology department and in other units of the university, and most qualfied applicants receive some form of financial assistance. These assistantships include: 

  • Teaching and research assistantships with the department. Stipends are available for the nine-month academic year, plus a tuition waiver scholarship.  

  • Administrative and research assistantships in other units of the university. Stipends vary. 

  • Research assistantships on funded research projects. Stipends vary. 

  • Graduate school fellowships are also available on a competitive basis. Financial support for minorities is available through the Rhoten A. Smith Assistantship Program. 

Tuition (including out-of-state tuition is waived for holders of assistantships and fellowships. Grants-in-aid and loans are also available through the Student Financial Aid Office.
