Associate Professor

Ph.D. North Carolina State University

Scholarly Interests: I am concerned with the intersections of privileges and disadvantages.  Inequality results from a complex, paradoxical set of social processes, and my work focuses on these contradictions.  My research has addressed the following issues: the ways that Black and white women work to overcome racism; the ways that people talk about race in private; the ways that positionality affects qualitative research; the ways that gay and lesbian police officers negotiate gender expectations at work; and how to teach inequality.  I integrate my research agenda into my teaching practices, and vice versa.

Recent Courses Taught: Social Problems, The Sociology of Gender, Work and Inequality, Qualitative Research Methods, Social Inequality, Research in Women's Studies, and The Sociology of Knowledge.
