Lucy Sosa wins competitive University Fellowship for AY 2010-2011

Lucy Sosa is one of ten recipients of the NIU University Fellowship for the 2009-2010 academic year.  These fellowships, administered by the Graduate School, are intended to provide support to expedite the progress of superior students toward their (nondoctoral) graduate degrees. She was also a recipient of the 2008 Mother's Memorial Scholarship.

Lucy Sosa was born in the United States.  When she was ready to enter school, her family moved to Puerto Rico, where she failed first grade because she spoke no Spanish.  Many years later she came back to the United States, having forgotten how to speak English.  Her primary goal was to relearn the language so she could enter college.  She earned her Associate of Arts degree at Kishwaukee College and two Bachelor degrees at NIU in Sociology and Translation and Business Spanish.

Sosa is currently completing her Masters in Sociology. Of her career goals, Sosa said, “I have dreams of saving the world from itself but I will content myself with having a career in research, teaching, and/or advocacy.  My greatest passion is advocacy.”
