Carol WaltherPh.D. Texas A&M University
My hometown is very similar to DeKalb, as I was raised in rural Indiana where my parents still reside, growing corn and cattle. My first sociology class had more people in it than my entire graduating high school class. I recently earned my PhD and hold a Master of Science from Texas A&M University. I have two bachelor degrees (sociology and biology) from Indiana University. Before coming to NIU, I was on the faculty at Indiana University, Purdue University – Fort Wayne where I taught demography, introduction to sociology, and feminist theories.
My research focuses on social inequalities and demography. I specifically examine the influence of the state upon how people interact with governmental forms. Furthermore, I am examining how the influence of religion on the settlement patterns of same-gender couples.
Outside of academia, I am an avid camper, sports fan, voracious and eclectic reader, and bike rider. My family and I even managed to go “car-free” for several months in Texas before moving back to the Midwest. My favorite professional sports teams all involve the state of Indiana: Colts, Pacers, and Fever.
